Up until now the wires I have had in place have been fairly thin and round. When they are put into the brackets there is a bit of a tighter feeling, and a slight return of the tender feeling, but this quickly passes.
Today I was to receive my first thicker square profiled wire…we’re starting on the business end of the tooth movement now and Dr Levinson is calling in the cavalry.
The technology in those tiny little ‘self ligating’ brackets enables quick wire changes and longer time between appointments, which means less inconvenient chair time for us patients. I highly recommend asking to have another look at the model with the braces on it once you have braces fitted because you have a whole new perspective on them, and it is quite fascinating to see something so tiny and relate that to what is in your mouth.
Well, after a few days with the firmer wire and the greater forces on my rear molars with their big double root system I was a little bit tender still. These teeth take a bit longer to respond and require more force to move them, and now that my front teeth were starting to take their corrected positions it is time for those back teeth to succumb and start to move too.
Let me tell you, when those teeth are feeling the pressure chewing on anything is not as comfortable as it used to be, especially given that I was relying on my back molars for almost all of my eating.
Well, I’m sure it won’t be long until they are back to normal again…whatever normal is these days.
