TADs or Mini Screws are small titanium screws that we place in your jaw to assist with tooth movement.
These clever little devices allow us to move your teeth in ways that often avoids the need for more complex treatment, extractions or additional appliance therapy depending on your individual circumstances.
The nuts & bolts of mini screws
Movement of teeth that used to be really tricky ~ if not impossible ~ is now possible using TADs, and the best part is that it is a very simple procedure that takes only a few minutes.
Once your mini screw has been placed, you may experience some mild discomfort. This generally feels like a dull ache and can last for up to 24 hours. You might like to take some Panadol of Nurofen to make you more comfortable. If the discomfort persists for more than 48 hours, please call us so we can make an appointment to see you.
You may find that the screw head irritates your lip or cheek. Your orthodontic Magic Wax can be applied to the screw in the same way that you would with your braces.
It is very important to keep the screw as clean as possible, and we recommend brushing it at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush and the Chlorhexidine gel that you have been given.
Occasionally, a screw may become a little loose. This is usually nothing to worry about, however, please remember to tell us about it at your next appointment. If the screw becomes really loose, or you start to feel too much discomfort, please call us so that we can take a look to make sure that it is OK.
Your mini screw will generally be in place for several months (sometimes longer) depending on the amount of tooth movement we need to achieve. We will remove the screw when it is no longer required by placing some numbing gel around it before backing it out very gently.
Removing a TAD is a quick and painless procedure that takes about 10 seconds.
Be sure that you keep your scheduled appointments so that we can supervise your progress and ensure that your treatment proceeds uneventfully.
