- Completed the requirements for registration as a dentist (an undergraduate degree requiring five years full time study) followed by at least two years of general dental practice, and a further three years of full time specialist training in orthodontics.
- Completed a rigorous process for granting of full membership to the ASO and only qualified specialist orthodontists are eligible to apply;
- The knowledge and skill base state registration boards and ASO policy regard as required to become a dental specialist;
- Registration as a specialist dentist by Australian governments. Just as medical specialists such as cardiologists, anaethetists and surgeons – they only practice within their specialties as an orthodontist does not do general dental practice;
- Access to continuing professional development through regular courses and meetings.
