What can I do about mouth ulcers?

Ulcers form due to the irritation of your braces or appliance against your cheeks. Regular mouth rinses with warm water and salt will help to aid healing.

You should also use the orthodontic wax given at the beginning of treatment.

  1. Simply pinch off a piece of wax
  2. Roll it into a ball until softened
  3. Ensure the area is dry, and
  4. Mould around the part of the appliance causing the irritation.

Alternatively, if the long wire is easily accessible, you could use side cutting nail scissors/clippers to cut it short – see the previous article about creating a basic orthodontic care kit.

Watch as Emily explains how to apply wax to a bracket causing an irritation.
